What is Carpooling?
Carpooling can be an easy and efficient way to share the ride to work with 2 or 3 of your co-workers or neighbors. You don't have to carpool everyday to make a difference in your monthly expenses and to help reduce congestion and air pollution. In fact, if everyone carpooled just once a week, traffic would be reduced by 20%.

Is carpooling for me?
Carpoolers usually live 3 to 15 miles from work and travel at least 15 minutes each way. You should have a similar work schedule to your carpool partners and you all can decide what your daily departure times will be. Carpoolers often rotate the driving on a daily or weekly schedule which means you will need to do a little planning to make sure your car is available on your designated drive days. If you don’t have a car, just make that known up front. There are plenty of people who need their car and will want to drive.

How do I get started?

  1. Get a group of friends and co-workers together or carpool with your spouse.

    • If you need assistance finding a rideshare partner, complete the on-line matchlist application or call commuteSmart Rideshare at 1-800-826-Ride. We provide a free computer matchlist with names of other commuters who wish to carpool. You’ll be matched based on your home and work locations and your work schedule. Call us anytime for an updated matchlist, to correct your profile, or to modify your match criteria. Your personal information is used for rideshare matching purposes only.

  2. Plan Ahead! Make arrangements to meet potential carpool partners ahead of time to map out all the details:
  • How many days a week will you carpool?
  • Who drives and when?
  • Where will you meet? (Door-to-door or Park & Ride lot)
  • Are there any costs that need to be shared by the group?
  • What do I do if I am running late or must stay late at work?
  • Will you have a smoking or non-smoking carpool?
  • What are the driver’s responsibilities?
  1. Be open-minded and prepared to discuss your differences.
  • Establishing a set of rules will help avoid conflict, but rules can’t cover every situation. Being kind, courteous, and understanding will make your carpooling experience a wonderful one!
  1. Do something fun!
  • Bring donuts once in a while or meet for lunch. Ridesharing can be a great way to meet people and establish freindships that will last for years.
  1. When your carpool is up and running don’t forget to call commuteSmart Rideshare to register your group.
  • If you carpool (or vanpool) two or more days per week, and you are registered in the rideshare matching database, you will be eligible to participate in the Guaranteed Ride Home Program.
