Information on Tax-free Transportation
Benefits for Employers and Employees:
Corporations across the
nation have banded together to create legislation
enabling employers to offer their employees a flexible
transportation benefits programs. Under the Transportation Equity Act for the
21st Century, employers can now offer:
- A tax-free benefit to
employees who vanpool or ride transit (up to
$100.00 per employee per month). The benefit is
considered non-taxable income to the employee.
The benefits are tax deductible to the employer
as a business expense.
- A pre-tax benefit to
employees who vanpool or ride transit (up to
$100.00 per employee per month), or employees who
pay for parking (up to $175 per employee per
month).
- A combination of the
two options above to employees who vanpool or
ride transit.

Where parking is
provided for free, the employer can establish a
value for the parking space and offer: free
parking, a tax-free vanpool/transit benefit, or
taxable cash benefits to carpoolers, bikers and
walkers who agree to surrender their free parking
space.

To
simplify the distribution of Tax-free benefits, your company can
purchase vouchers for your employees who ride transit or
vanpool. For information on purchasing vanpool vouchers, go

Let us help create a promotional event that will

- Employee
Transportation Coordinator (ETC) Training and
Development: An ETC is an internal point
person for company employees to turn to for
assistance with transportation issues. commuteSmart
Rideshare
will
help your company designate and train an ETC. We
offer group training sessions, one-on-one
support, and will provide easy to follow plans
and programs to implement at the workplace.

and Rideshare Services: commuteSmart
Rideshare staff come to you! We
provide an array of rideshare services such as Ridematching, Carpooling, Vanpooling, and Guaranteed
Ride Home.
